In the lovely resort town of Quepos, situated near Manuel Antonio National Park, tourists are typically welcome with open arms and the typical Tico hospitality. This was not the case recently when a 200-kilogram crocodile made his way through the town's streets. The sight of the massive crocodile sent tourists and children scattering, according to a report issued by the country's Public Security Ministry. Authorities reported that the 2.5-meter-long crocodile made his way ashore from a local estuary. Eventually firefighters, police, and even a few locals managed to wrangle the reptile onto a truck before releasing him into the wild with the National System of Conservation Areas supervising the release. During his foray into town, the croc seemed to be more curious than a danger. According to police, the crocodile's visit to town resulted in no injuries. This was not the first time that a crocodile made its way into a residential area. A 300-kilogram crocodile recently had to be relocated after being found in Playa Claritas, a town located south of Jacó.
The tranquil tropical inlet of Quepos, largely surrounded by primary rainforest, often serves as a base for tourists making their way to the area to visit Manuel Antonio and the surrounding area. The month-long party known as Festival del Mar, which takes place in February, typically features sporting events, parades, concerts, and a street Carnival. Consequently, tourism is now the leading employer in Quepos, which much of the local economy relying on the travelers who make their way to Quepos from around the world. Many of the visitors who first visit Quepos later return to purchase homes and enjoy the tranquil lifestyle and natural beauty of the surrounding area.
The prompt response of local authorities to the rather unorthodox visitor to Quepos ensures that locals and visitors alike are able to continue enjoying all that Quepos has to offer without concern.
