Injured Toucan Receives Compassion and Assistance from Across Costa Rica

When an injured toucan by the name of Grecia lost the upper portion of his peak, a campaign was begun that would result in Grecia receiving compassion from across Costa Rica. The injury occurred when Grecia was injured during an attack by a group of young people, resulting in his beak being broken with a wooden block. Following the attack, the toucan was placed under the care of Zoo Ave, an animal rescue center.

The director of Zoo Ave, Guisella Arroyo, has since stated that Grecia is stable, but it will take some time for him to recover completely. Approximately 3,000 orphaned and abused animals are brought to the rescue center in Alajuela each year.

Case Attracts Donations and Attention

After news broke regarding the bird's injury, the case attracted widespread attention from across the country, as a variety of companies specializing in 3D modeling and printing began working to design a prosthetic beak for Grecia. With a successful prosthetic beak, it will be possible for the toucan to be self-sufficient. For the time being, Grecia remains dependent upon his caregivers at the Zoo Ave rescue center to medicate him and feed him.

Since then a campaign named "Un Tucan por el tucan" was established for the purpose of raising funds to support the rescue center and the development of his prosthesis. The former Minister of Health, María Luisa Ávila, has also supported the campaign. It is hoped that the campaign will not only result in raising money but also bring awareness to the issue of animal abuse in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica is home to six species of toucans. Some of those species feature bills that are actually longer than their bodies. These birds rely on their bills for reaching berries and fruit from thin branches. Additionally, while the bills are hollow, they are quite tough, which makes it possible for the birds to defend themselves against predators. As a result, Grecia is virtually defenseless and unable to care for himself due to his injuries.

Due to the severity of his injury, Grecia will not be able to return to his former habitat. Due to donations received along with Zoo Ave's dedication, and the graciousness of the 3D printing companies working toward creating a prosthesis, Grecia will one day be able to adapt to a new environment and enjoy a higher quality of life.
